Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that attacks cells in your body. There are three common types of alopecia: areata, totalis and univeralis.
Alopecia areata is the most common which attacks the hair follicle and creates bald patches or spots on the scalp.
Alopecia totalis is more severe than areata which affects the whole head, including the scalp, eyebrows and eyelashes.
Alopecia universalis is the most severe which means the individual loses hair all over the body.
The disease affects different people in different ways, some may suffer for as little as a few months and their hair may grow back, whereas others may have more severe cases lasting years that requires attention.
The most obvious effects of alopecia areata are hair loss, but it has many negative effects emotionally such as insecurity and damaging self-esteem. It can lead to frustration and imposes limitations on expressions, such as how you style your hair or having to wear a hat to hide it.
No matter the severity, it isn't a nice feeling knowing you have no control over your appearance, therefore people search for treatments.
Whilst there is no direct cure for alopecia, there are many treatments to help disguise or attempt to help the hair grow back. A common method is a hair transplant, whilst it works for some, others can be left with another set of problems due to the transplant failing in patches, or leaving scarring. A lot of patience, and sometimes money, is required to achieve the desired results.
This then brings you back full circle with hair insecurities, a significant amount of money down and in search of yet another solution.
There are also topical agents which you can rub into your scalp, injections and oral treatments but none can guarantee results.
Scalp micropigmentation on the other hand is 100% effective, and alternative solution that aids alopecia.
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical hair loss treatment that creates impressions of hair follicles using a tool similar to a tattoo gun. A hair tattoo can be used for many different circumstances, such as male pattern baldness, receding hairlines, scarring (whether it be from a hair transplant or operation), thinning hair (on the scalp or face) and of course, alopecia. Whilst a scalp tattoo creates the look of a full head of hair, it does not induce hair growth, nor does it induce hair thickening. The procedure is purely cosmetic.
No matter the current state of your alopecia, SMP is always a viable option. Different factors are taken into consideration during your consultation to ensure your treatment is optimal for you. No one person is the same, therefore why should the treatment be? Some of the factors we consider are age, skin tone and lifestyle to name a few.
No matter the current state of alopecia is affecting you, there is a solution with SMP. Below we have outlined two main methods to treat you depending on the severity. A more detailed personal plan will be made during consultation.
If you have mild alopecia where just small patches of your hair are missing hair density treatment is used to camouflage thinning hair by creating the appearance of a fuller head of hair.
The treatment is carried out over 3 to 4 sessions depending on the individual, and unlike a hair transplant where you can be waiting on average 18 months to see results, SMP you will see results after the initial treatment and the final result after your last.
If you have a more severe case of alopecia areata where you have been forced to shave your hair/keep it very short or have areas of hair missing, the whole scalp can be treated; including the hairline. The scalp micropigmentation specialist will create a seamless look by merging your existing hair with the ink impressions giving again the appearance of a full head of hair that is perfect for you.
Similarly to hair density, the treatment will be carried out over 3 to 4 sessions with the results visible after the first session.
Cost can differ in countries and clinics, and then across the treatments themselves. There are many variables, but we wrote a pricing guide to give you a direct answer.
Below is our process on our SMP procedure. The treatment will be complete after a number of sittings, which is usually a minimum of 3, potentially more depending on the individual.
The process kicks off with a detailed consultation. We will assess your current situation and plan the route forward, including styles, the amount of sessions and requirements for your first treatment session. We will also walk you through the procedure in person.
During this consultation any of your questions will be answered so you have everything you need to being the treatment.
For your scalp micropigmentation to look the best quality and authentic is simply can't be done in a day of treatment. As a rule of thumb you will require a minimum of three sittings.
In your first session, we will start mapping out your treatment (of course this will vary depending on your required treatment). After mapping out, you will be left with some initial impressions.
In your second session, we will sit down and make more impressions to give your scalp a layered looking effect. It will start to all come together in this session. Grain, density and darkness will be added to give a natural effect.
After each session, you will start to see the results take shape.
For some individuals, this may be your last treatment, but in this session, we will make more impressions on your scalp and finishing touches.
We will also give you a complete aftercare guide to ensure that you are left with long-lasting results.
Don’t worry, if you require more than three sessions it isn’t bad, it just means that we need to do a little extra work to ensure we give you the best results possible.
This could be down to many factors, such as the size of the area being treated, skin type, potential scarring and more.
Your treatment is now complete! Aftercare is just as important as the treatment to ensure long lasting effects.
Upon completion we will talk your through how to maintain your scalp micropigmentation, but you can also find a detailed aftercare guide here too.
Whether you are losing hair or suffer from complete hair loss, scalp micropigmentation is definitely a viable option for alopecia. You don't need to worry about the results being effective and you have full control over the outcome.
Your next steps should be to get more familiar with the scalp micropigmentation process and then start to look for a certified artist. Whilst the procedure is similar to a tattoo, a tattoo artist can not carry out the procedure - you should stay clear of those who say they can to avoid complications.
When searching for an SMP specialist we recommend you look at their previous work and their testimonials, as they will speak volumes.
Once selecting a few different artists you should then organise a consultation and get a feel for them. Make sure you bring any questions you may have with you to get them cleared up. You will know which one feels best for your treatment. To help you kick start this process, we offer a free consultation which you can book below. If you are around London, it can be carried out in person or an online consultation can be done too. Feel free the checkout our website for testimonials and our gallery.
We're excited for you because if you had read this far then you are pretty serious about making the change. From personal experience, it has been a pivotal part it not just our founder's life, but all of our clients too. We wish you nothing but the best!
Our very own founder, Georgio Pegasiou, had his own hair loss journey. At just 25 Georgio noticed his hairline receeding, and tried every hair style to cover it until it not longer was effective. Being a barber he also saw that pros and cons of his clients who had opted for different procedures, although his research lead him to SMP.
Since his treatment his confidense has been restored and become passionate about helping others.
"Came across George’s SMP services when scrolling through Instagram.
Due to my ongoing hair loss issues I thought I’d enquire and see what help George could be to me. His customer service was amazing and the treatment was even better.
I have a whole new level of confidence in my look since George performed the SMP on me. I would highly recommend to anyone in a similar situation."
"Come across this company via a friend. I was planning to have a hair transplant and my friend told me about SMP and recommended me to have a free consultation with George.
Overall experience was exceptional and I no longer need a hair transplant after having this amazing SMP treatment from visionary scalps. Highly recommended."
Was hesitant at first as I was new to hearing about this procedure but all was well from my first consultation onwards.
George was very professional and informative explaining the full procedure from start to finish. Overall, extremely happy with my results and I wish I had done it sooner.
Thanks George and Visionary Scalps. Highly recommend.
I was recommended this company by my brother who has had SMP done with Georgio and things couldn't have gone better.
He was very professional and on the ball with good communication and patience with me.
One thing I really appreciated was his respect for my privacy.
Everything went perfectly and would be happy to use and recommend this service again.
Thank you for the boost in confidence!!!
"What to say about Visionary Scalps. In one word. Amazing. George was extremely friendly and talked me through everything before it happened.
My hairline was getting really patchy and I wasn’t ready to go bold yet. George was really understanding and showed me his previous work and I’m over the MOON with the results. If your ever in need of a little hair touch up. Visionary Scalps is the place to go!"
"I hadn't heard of SMP until it was recommended by a friend so I booked a consultation with George who was more than happy to walk me through the process.
We focussed on whether or not SMP was my best option and in the end I decided to get a small amount of work on my crown. I thought my hair would have been too long to notice the SMP but actually the difference is night and day. 10/10 would defo recommend."
"Great service from George
Can’t believe I never done this sooner

Would 100% recommend"
"Uncle George has made my daddy look like a younger man and my sister and I love it.
Thank you for making him feel a little more confident in himself."
"George was patient, took his time and and did not miss a spot. This treatment has been life changing and I am so thankful that he spent the time to make sure the finished result was exactly what i wanted, truly a perfectionist. I now have the confidence to hold my head up high, just the boost I needed, simply amazing."
"I came in with the mindset that it won’t really do much, and to begin with it didn’t feel like it done anything, but then the second/third session really stood out to me and gave my hair a more thick/full look. Would recommend if you want to just add that extra to your hair."
