What is scalp micropigmentation?

SMP or Scalp Micropigmentation is a popular solution for thinning hair or hair loss. The process includes injecting ink impressions into the dermal layers of the scalp giving a shaved appearance that mimics natural hair follicles. SMP is most commonly know for its short, shaven appearance, although it can also create the impression of thicker, fuller hair.

If you have a scalp micropigmentation problem after your treatment, you might have questions about the effectiveness of the aftercare procedures; but by following our guidelines you will be good to go with long lasting results.

What is SMP aftercare?

Scalp micropigmentation aftercare is important in order to preserve the finished results. The following procedures should be followed after each SMP session and after the entire treatment is completed. This requires daily maintenance on the scalp.

The quality of your aftercare following your SMP treatment will dictate the final outcome. The purpose of scalp micropigmentation aftercare is to reduce the chance of fade, thus prolonging your SMP.

What happens after your SMP treatment?

After your final treatment session is complete you will be looking like a new person. Now the treatment is finished the rest is up to you to ensure you have the best possible results and longevity.

All treatment areas must be cleaned (after the first 3 days) and hair must not be wet if possible. It also means you must avoid saunas, tanning beds, chlorinated pools and steam rooms. A blood donor should avoid giving blood until at least one year after SMP treatment.

Here are some guidelines on aftercare but still deliver results. Always contact a scalp micropigmentation specialist for more detailed advice or if you have any questions that aren't covered below.

Key Aftercare Tips (in between and after treatments)

  • Moisturise daily
  • Avoid excessive sweating
  • Keep your head dry as much as possible
  • Try not to rub your scalp on treated areas (use a dabbing motion if itchy)

Aftercare Tips

SMP Close up

Day 0 to Day 5

In the first three days after scalp micropigmentation treatment, you should treat your scalp like an open wound, and therefore it is important to keep it clean. Avoid washing the scalp and excessive sweating, so no tough cardio sessions. Let your scalp breathe so the tattoo can heal.

You should avoid wetting your head in the shower for the first 3 days. Instead, dab your head with a damp cloth or flannel.

We request that you try to  avoid swimming pools or hot tubs as the chlorine, water and heat may affect the colour, cause bleeds and premature fading.

If you are outdoors often use a sunscreen factor 50 (after 3 days) preferably. The UV rays will not only be damaging to your scalp, but sunscreen will prevent your SMP from fading too quickly.

Over the days following, scabs will form on the treated area so avoid any physical contact to prevent any unwanted scarring.

Day 6 to 30

After the first 6 days, your SMP will be starting to settle in and will be healing nicely. It is important that you start to create an aftercare routine. We still suggest that you stay away from activities that will induce excessive sweating, and it is still important to moisturise often, preferably non-greasy. A good rule of thumb is to moisturise every 8 hours unless you have particularly dry skin.

Whilst this is a guideline, your SMP specialist will give your more personal pointers to ensure the quality and longevity of your treatment. During this healing stage, your head may be a bit itchy but this is perfectly normal.

You can now go back to using soap on your scalp, preferably with no alcohol or harsh chemicals and a light shower.

Day 30+

You can now get back in the saunas, steam rooms and swimming pools. The key things to maintain from day 30+ is maintaining a moisturised scalp if it feels dry, and applying sun cream.

When to wash your scalp after SMP

  • Days 1- 3 avoid washing or wetting your head
  • Days 3-6 dab head with a wet towel or flannel
  • Days 6-30 wash your head normally avoiding harsh chemicals and alcohol

Avoid Excessive sweating post SMP

Ensure you do not sweat too much. Please avoid saunas, saunas and baths. We recommend five days, however, it may vary based on the individual. You may continue exercising if you don't sweat excessively.

Cutting your hair after scalp micropigmentation

After 1 week you can use an electric shaver to shave your head. For best results, we recommend to use an electric foil shaver that cut the hair right down to the scalp (once fully healed). Whilst healing we recommend again wet shaving. Our founder Georgio can be seen below showing the importance of keeping your hair short with SMP.

The healing process

You have had many little impressions over your head over multiple sessions it is no wonder your scalp may be tender. The healing process will take 7-10 days for your treatment to be completely healed but is different for everyone.

Redness, itchiness and swelling on the scalp are all very common - it is a natural response of your body and you may also notice as previously mentioned that you may leak ink. This is due to the ink being a foreign body to your scalp therefore your body is trying to reject it. Should this happen, just dab carefully with a damp cloth and ensure you dry.

Aftercare FAQ

What should you not do after scalp micropigmentation?

Do not tan or use tanning beds or direct sunlight until the skin heals. You can also use a hydrating cream to help keep your skin hydrated.

You should not swim in a pool until you have completely healed as harsh chemicals such as chlorine can lead to fading. Just to clarify, the scalp typically takes between 7-10 days to heal, so no sooner than day 10 should you swim in a pool to have the best possible results.

Do not apply any products such as makeup to areas treated till the skin heals thoroughly.

Can I drink alcohol or take medication post SMP?

Yes, the treatment itself will have no bearing on the effects of both alcohol and medication. You can celebrate your new look with a pint.

When can you moisturise after SMP?

You can start moisturising after 3 days. Aqueous cream is a good option for cleansing and moisturising.
